ICC Cricket World Cup: In the ICC Cricket World Cup, India beat Afghanistan by eight wickets at Arun Jaitley Stadium, in New Delhi.

Chasing a target of 273 runs to win, India achieved the target in 35 overs. Skipper Rohit Sharma added another humongous milestone to his already illustrious career with a scintillating century against Afghanistan. The veteran batter looked in tremendous touch as he dominated the Afghanistan bowlers and was able to complete his ton in just 63 deliveries.

It was the fastest century by an Indian batter in Cricket World Cup history and he broke the record belonging to legendary all-rounder Kapil Dev who slammed a 72-ball century against Zimbabwe in a 1983 World game that is etched in history books. Rohit Sharma also surpassed West Indies legend Chris Gayle to become the batter with the most number of sixes in international cricket across all formats of Cricket.

Rohit slammed three massive sixes to take his tally to 554 and in the process, went past the mammoth tally of Gayle (553) in Tests, ODIs, and T20Is combined.

Earlier, electing to bat Afghanistan scored 272 for eight in stipulated 50 overs. For Afghanistan, Skipper Hashmatullah scored 80 runs in 87 balls while Azmatullah Omarzai scored 62 in 69 balls. India’s Jasprit Bumrah scalped Four wickets for 39 runs while Hardik Pandya took two wickets for 43.

Shardul Thakur and Kuldeep Yadav got one wicket each.
