Ramdev’s Patanjali claims to have COVID-19 medicine: Coronil

Coronavirus cases are surging alarmingly in India. The number of positive cases has crossed 4 lakh mark and heading towards 5 lakh mark quite swiftly.

Amid all this, Baba Ramdev’s company Patanjali Ayurved Ltd. has come up with an Ayurvedic medicine ‘Coronil’, claiming it to be a cure for deadly disease. Baba Ramdev claimed that the medicine can cure coronavirus positive patients in just seven days.

It is a kit which has three bottles of medicines. He has advised people to take all the three components of the medicine simultaneously to eradicate effect of the virus.

As and when it was announced by Baba Ramdev, there has been quite a furore in India. We have seen stern reactions from many corners. Some are even mocking the claims and ridiculed the idea of the medicine.

As I came to know that it is entirely an Ayurvedic product, I was quite surprised on the resistance that the product is facing at the moment. Eventually, even Ayush Ministry distanced itself from the breakthrough that Baba Ramdev claimed.

Hurriedly, the ministry asked the Yoga Guru to stop the advertisement of the medicine until its efficacy is proved and the research conducted is being validated as per the norms.
But I have learned that the Coronil medicine carries only natural components like Ashwagandha, Giloy and Tulsi, I am quite surprised as to why there was a hue and cry over the medicine.

The other bottles that come along in the kit has one natural oil which the patients are required to put in their noses. The last component is an Ayurvedic medicine for respiratory ailments and it is already in the market.

Ayurveda has been historically used in India to cure all kinds of diseases. As far as my knowledge goes, there are very minimal or little side effects of the Ayurveda products. Keeping that in mind, I felt that the reaction was a bit too exaggerated.

At present, the Patanjali Ayurved Ltd. has submitted its research documents to the government. If there is any clamp down which is possible then it is on the claims that it can cure the coronavirus. The company is fighting over it and we will know about it in due course of time.

However, as the company is also claiming that the medicine can be used as a prevention or immunity booster, one cannot completely restrict the medicine. It will eventually come into the market. If it is helping people, then I think there is no harm in taking the medicine.

Amid the current scenario, any medicine, which is handy, should be given the attention. There is absolutely no need for allopathic medical fraternity to get panicky and react sharply. At present, the medicine is needed irrespective of the source from where it is coming. It would be interesting to see how people react to the Coronil. It will say it all.
