Guru Nanak Jayanti 2024: Open and Closed Institutions

This Friday, November 15, several institutions across India, including banks, schools, and the National Stock Exchange (NSE) and Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE), will close in observance of Guru Nanak Jayanti and Karthika Purnima. This holiday honors Guru Nanak, the founder of Sikhism, and is widely celebrated in India, with additional observances in states like Odisha and Telangana.

Bank Closures Across States

As per the Reserve Bank of India’s (RBI) holiday schedule, many banks across India will remain closed on November 15. Key states observing the holiday include Maharashtra, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, Telangana, Jharkhand, and Mizoram. In Karnataka, banks will also close on November 18 for Kanakadasa Jayanti, and in Meghalaya, on November 23 for Seng Kutsnem. Despite these closures, online and mobile banking services will still be available for transactions.

Stock Market Closed

Investors and traders will have an extended weekend, as the NSE and BSE will close for trading on November 15, resuming on Monday, November 18. No trading will occur in stocks, derivatives, or the SLB (Securities Lending and Borrowing) segments. The next scheduled market holiday is on December 25 for Christmas.

School Closures Nationwide

Schools across the country will also close on November 15 in honor of Guru Nanak Jayanti. Some states, like Punjab, will have an additional holiday on November 16 to commemorate the martyrdom of Kartar Singh Sarabha. In Odisha, schools will also observe Rahas Purnima, a cultural event of significance in the state, on November 15.
