2025 Academy Awards: Full List of Winners and Highlights

The 97th Academy Awards, held on March 9, 2025, was a night of triumph for Anora, Sean Baker’s critically acclaimed drama, which took home five Oscars, including the coveted Best Picture and Best Director awards. The film’s success was a testament to Baker’s multifaceted talent, as he also won for Best Film Editing and Best Original Screenplay, tying Walt Disney’s record for the most Oscars won by a single person in one year. Disney achieved this feat in 1954, though his wins were for multiple projects, while Baker’s victories were all for Anora.

The evening was filled with historic moments and fierce competition. Emilia Pérez, the year’s most-nominated film with 13 nods, made headlines when Karla Sofía Gascón became the first transgender woman to receive an acting nomination for her portrayal of the film’s titular character. However, her campaign was overshadowed by controversy after past offensive social media posts resurfaced. The Best Actress award ultimately went to Mikey Madison for her captivating performance in Anora.

Other major contenders included Wicked, the adaptation of the beloved Broadway musical, and The Brutalist, both of which earned 10 nominations each. While Wicked won two awards, including Best Costume Design, The Brutalist secured Best Cinematography and Best Original Score. Zoe Saldaña made history as the first American of Dominican descent to win an Oscar, taking home Best Supporting Actress for her role in Emilia Pérez.
