Atishi
Delhi Chief Minister Atishi submitted her resignation to Lieutenant Governor V K Saxena today, a day after the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) faced a crushing defeat in the assembly elections. Despite retaining her Kalkaji seat, Atishi stepped down from her position during a meeting with the Lt Governor at Raj Niwas this morning.
Atishi had assumed office as Chief Minister in September last year, succeeding AAP convenor Arvind Kejriwal, who resigned amid corruption allegations. Meanwhile, Lt Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena has officially dissolved the Seventh Legislative Assembly of the National Capital Territory of Delhi, effective February 8.
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) secured a decisive victory in the Delhi Assembly elections, winning 48 out of 70 seats, marking its return to power in the capital after 26 years. The AAP managed to secure only 22 seats, while the Congress failed to win any.
BJP leaders indicated that the party will stake its claim to form the government next week, following Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s return from an overseas visit. Speaking to the media, Delhi BJP President Virendra Sachdeva assured that the party would fulfill its promises and work towards making Delhi a developed and progressive capital.
