This year the festival of Janamasthmi will be celebrated on August 24. It is celebrated across India especially in cities of Mathura, Gokul, and Vrindavan in UP. On an auspicious day, Lord Krishna temples are decorated, procession, Bhajan-kirtans are organized to celebrate Lord Krishna birth.
Significance of Janmashtami
When Lord Krishna was born it is said that there was darkness and was a lot of evil around. Also his own uncle King Kanasa was a treat to his life.
After his birth, Lord Krishna father Vasudeva crossed the Yamuna and took him to Nanda and Yashoda who became his foster parents in Gokul. The birth of this legend is celebrated as Krishna Janmashtami.
Krishna is the god which represents the victory over the evil. He transformed being a prankster child to the god who gave Bhagavad Gita updesh to Arjuna.
Krishna Janmashtami is celebrated for two days, the next day is celebrated as Gopal Kala or Dahi Handi.

The devotees observe fast on Krishna Janmasthami 2019 every year. The idols are cleaned, bathed and decorated with new clothes, ornaments, and flowers. After which the idol is placed in a cradle to symbolize his birth.
As a symbol of Krishna journey to their homes, tiny footprints are drawn outside the house till the kitchen.
Sweets like Makhaan Mishti, Peda, Rabdi, Panchamrit, Kheer, etc are offered to Lord Krishna.
