Women’s Hockey Legend Rani Rampal Retires from Playing

Indian women’s hockey icon Rani Rampal has officially retired from her playing career, marking the end of a legendary chapter in Indian sports. Rani’s incredible journey on the field began when she made her international debut at just 14 years old during the Olympic qualifiers in Kazan in 2008, where she set a record as the youngest woman to play at the senior level for India. Over her 15-year career, Rani played in 254 international matches and netted an impressive 120 goals, becoming one of the sport’s most celebrated athletes.

Rani’s impact on Indian hockey is monumental. She was a vital part of the national team that clinched a silver medal in the 2009 Asia Cup and later played a decisive role in securing a bronze at the 2014 Asian Games. Her leadership and dedication have inspired countless young athletes and elevated Indian women’s hockey on the global stage.

As a tribute to her outstanding contributions, Hockey India honored Rani by retiring her iconic No. 28 jersey, a symbolic recognition of her status as a legend in the sport. Known as the “Queen of Indian Hockey,” her legacy on the field will be remembered for years to come.

Rani’s journey in hockey, however, doesn’t end with her retirement as a player. In 2023, Hockey India appointed her as the coach for India’s under-17 women’s team, where she will now focus on training and mentoring the next generation of players. Her transition to coaching highlights her commitment to the sport and her desire to continue contributing to the growth of Indian hockey. Additionally, Rani has taken on the role of coach and mentor for the Soorma Hockey Club, which will compete in the upcoming Hockey India League, further expanding her influence on Indian hockey.

Through her achievements and her new roles, Rani Rampal’s legacy will endure as she shapes future stars in Indian hockey. Her retirement as a player opens a new chapter where she will continue to inspire and elevate the sport she loves.
