The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) achieved another milestone with the successful launch of the Space Docking Experiment (SpaDeX) mission. The launch took place last night from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota.
ISRO’s PSLV-C60 rocket carried two spacecraft, SDX01 (Chaser) and SDX02 (Target), designed to demonstrate space docking technology. Shortly after lift-off, the PSLV-C60 successfully deployed both satellites into low Earth orbit.
The SpaDeX mission is set to demonstrate advanced in-space docking capabilities, a critical technology for future space exploration missions such as lunar expeditions and the Bharatiya Antariksh Station (BAS). Over the next 10 days, the two spacecraft will maneuver in orbit to achieve docking, showcasing India’s progress in orbital operations.
ISRO Chairman S. Somnath confirmed that both satellites have deployed their panels successfully. In the coming days, the Chaser and Target satellites will travel approximately 20 kilometers before initiating the rendezvous and docking process, bringing them closer to each other for a successful connection in space.
