Israel Expands Military Operations with Yemen Airstrikes

Israel launched airstrikes on multiple targets in Yemen early Thursday, following the interception of a missile over central Israel. This marks Yemen as the latest active front in Israel’s ongoing military engagements outside Palestinian territories. The strikes targeted power stations in Sanaa and infrastructure in Hodeidah province, including ports and an oil terminal. According to Houthi-run media, the attacks resulted in nine reported casualties.

The Israeli military deployed fourteen fighter jets and support aircraft in what it described as a pre-planned operation aimed at weakening Houthi military capabilities. Although missile debris caused damage to a school in Ramat Efal, no casualties were reported from the interception in Israel.

This escalation comes amid heightened regional tensions. Since the outbreak of the Gaza conflict, the Houthis have launched numerous attacks on maritime vessels in the Red Sea. Over 90 merchant vessels have been targeted, with multiple ships destroyed and four sailors killed, despite international coalition efforts led by the United States.

Israel’s strikes signify a significant expansion of its military operations, following a recent ceasefire with Hezbollah in Lebanon. Hamas praised the Houthis’ actions and called for further attacks against Israel. Meanwhile, Houthi official Mohammed Al Bukhaiti vowed to continue their campaign until humanitarian aid is allowed into Gaza.

The broader conflict traces back to the October 7 attacks on Israel, which killed approximately 1,200 people. Israel’s military response in Gaza has resulted in over 45,000 Palestinian casualties. According to the Israeli military, the latest strikes in Yemen were not a direct retaliation for Houthi attacks but part of a broader strategic operation planned weeks in advance.
