Rebels Take Damascus; Assad Allegedly Flees to Safety

Syrian rebel forces have declared victory in the capital, Damascus, after a swift week-long offensive met no resistance from government troops. Reports suggest that President Bashar al-Assad, who ruled Syria for 24 years, has fled the country to an undisclosed location.

According to media sources, Syrian Prime Minister Mohammad Ghazi al-Jalali has expressed willingness to facilitate a peaceful transition of power to opposition forces. The rebels have proclaimed the end of Assad’s regime and heralded the beginning of a new chapter for Syria.

Hadi al-Bahra, leader of the main opposition group abroad, announced plans to engage with Arab and European nations, as well as the United Nations, to shape the country’s future.

The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported the withdrawal of Syrian military and security forces from Damascus International Airport. Meanwhile, rebels claim to have freed prisoners from the Saydnaya military prison north of Damascus and secured control over the strategic city of Homs.

Clashes between rebel forces and government troops have intensified since late last month, marking a pivotal turning point in Syria’s ongoing conflict.
